Study in Ireland

The education system in Ireland

Ireland has nine universities, 11 institutes of technology, and other public and private Higher Education Institutions(HEIs), including members of ICOS. Nepalese students can enroll in universities and institutes of technology across Ireland for their bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees. Irish education is an excellent way to develop yourself professionally. International students enroll in universities, technical institutes, or private colleges to study in Ireland. Entry requirement differs and is set by the individual educational institution. There are six different types of significant awards available in Ireland at these various levels:

  • NFQ Level 7 = Ordinary Bachelor Degree (3 years duration).
  • NFQ Level 8 = Honors Bachelor Degree (3-4 years duration).
  • NFQ Level 8 = Higher Diploma (1-year duration).
  • NFQ Level 9 = Postgraduate Diploma (1-year duration).
  • NFQ Level 9 = Masters Degree (1-2 years duration).
  • NFQ Level 10 = Doctoral Degree (approximately four years duration).

Undergraduate

You need to have a certificate of secondary education to study at an undergraduate level in Ireland. Colleges check your high school grades and consider your grade point average to determine admission eligibility.

Graduate / Postgraduate Degree

The best way to study in Ireland is through a postgraduate program at a university. The graduate program is offered directly through the school or the postgraduate application center.

Cost of Studying and Living

The cost of living for overseas students depends on your choice of student accommodation, location, course you enroll in, and your lifestyle. For example, the cost of living in Dublin city center is much higher than in rural areas. However, it also depends on what courses you are studying. For Nepalese students, the cost of living in Ireland is relatively cheaper compared to many European countries.

Tuition fees

All international students (both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA citizens) have to pay student fees of up to €3,000 per year for services like examinations and student clubs and societies. Tuition fees vary by college and are subject to change. Indicative Average tuition fees:

  • Undergraduate courses: 9,850 – 55,000 EUR/year
  • Postgraduate Master’s and PhD courses: 9,950 – 35,000 EUR/year

Scholarships in Ireland

The Government of Ireland, the Irish higher education institutions, and other organizations offer hundreds of scholarships for international students.

Academic Requirement

Undergraduate and PostgraduatePostgraduate programs are highly competitive, and admissions are based on academic merit. There are specific requirements for each program, and you should also check those requirements in the detailed course description before applying. English proficiency is a must for Nepalese students as teaching-learning is based on English. However, individual universities and colleges have their requirements and criteria for the English proficiency test results. In addition, the English language requirement can differ for postgraduate level compared to undergraduate level.

Visa Requirements

It would help if you got a student visa to study in Ireland as an international student. Before you apply for your student visa, you should verify that you can cover your financial expenses for an academic year. The expenses include your tuition fee, living cost, medical costs, and emergency funds. Don’t worry; we are here to help with tedious paperwork. You will need to provide the following with your visa application. (Please remember, original documents are required and must be in English or accompanied by a notarized translation).

  • Letter of acceptance from a recognized school or college or university in Ireland confirming that you have been accepted on a course of study. This course of study must be full-time (lasting an academic year) and have a minimum of 15 hours per week of study time.
  • Evidence of your academic ability to pursue the chosen course through the English language (unless it is an English language course).
  • Evidence that the fees for the course have been paid in full.
  • Evidence that you have enough funds (€7,000) to maintain yourself for the initial part of your stay.
  • Evidence that you or a sponsor have access to at least €7,000 for each subsequent year of your studies. It includes the course fees for each of those years.
  • Evidence that you have private medical insurance
  • An explanation of any gaps in your educational history
    • Confirmation that you intend to return to your country of permanent residence when you leave Ireland.
